(WPBN/WGTU)-- In honor of National Radon Action Week, the District 4 Health Department will be offering free radon test kits.
The kits will be available the week of Oct. 24 through the 28 at the Health Department District 4 offices. District 4 includes Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Montmorency, Otsego and Presque Isle counties.
The Health Department says radon is a colorless and odorless radioactive gas. It is one of the leading causes of lung cancer int he United States.
Radon is found in soil and rock and can seep into homes through gaps and cracks in the foundation and insulation, the Health Department says.
Measuring the radon levels in households can significantly reduce the risk of lung cancer for families.
Testing for radon is easy and inexpensive, and homes with elevated levels can be fixed.
